About Stay Sea Mermaid
Last month's issue was about the moment a book you are reading stops being a decoding exercise and becomes, for a page or two, just a book.
Stay Sea Mermaid is a letter for people past the beginning of a language and not yet fluent in it. That middle stretch is oddly underserved. The beginning has apps and courses and momentum. Fluency has its own reward. The part in between is where enthusiasm thins out and the useful advice grows scarce.
So that is the part this publication stays with. How to get past the first plateau, when the graph goes flat and nothing you do seems to move it. How to read a first whole book without giving up on page thirty. How to speak before you are ready, and keep speaking. How to test yourself honestly, which is harder than it sounds, because most self-assessment flatters.
Each issue is one piece of writing, arriving every other week. It might work through a single method, or a single failure, or a habit worth borrowing. It draws on how people actually learn rather than on how courses say they should. Where a claim is uncertain, Stay Sea Mermaid says so.
It deliberately avoids a few things. It does not promise fluency by a date. It does not rank the languages by difficulty as though that were settled. It does not fill the gaps between issues with reminders. There is one letter, every two weeks, and quiet in between.
